Johnson Controls Inc. has come up with a seating concept that can automatically adjust itself to fit the driver before anyone gets in the car.
The system links a computer program and the standard power controls for the driver’s seat. JCI says its researchers discovered that a proper seat fit isn’t as simple as matching up leg and torso length with a seat’s track and height adjustments.
But they did develop a program that figures out seat position based on your height and accurately pre-adjusts the seat.
Drivers can activate the system by entering their height into a smartphone app developed by JCI. The company points out that such a system would be handy for rental cars, car-sharing services or families where multiple members take turns driving the same vehicle.
Another pre-adjustment option would be to use an onboard camera to determine body size before the driver enters the vehicle. As a last resort, JCI says, drivers could tap their height into the vehicle’s digital control console after entering.
