Ford Motor Co. is preparing to launch a pair of recalls to fix airbag software and door handle defects in 2013-2014 model Escape small SUVs and C-Max multipurpose vehicles.
The larger campaign covers 692,700 Escapes worldwide, 84% of which are in the U.S. Ford says the vehicles have exterior door handles that could bind, prevent the door latch from engaging fully and allow the door to open while the vehicle is in motion. Dealers will adjusting the handles.
A separate recall of 692,500 Escapes and C-Max vehicles will reprogram faulty software that could prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying when they should during certain rollover crashes. The repair covers about 627,500 Escapes, many of which are likely to also be part of the door handle recall.
